Coco's recall.

Those stitches look sore, but it's amazing how quickly dogs heal, and they often don't notice the pain do they !!
Just reading about Coco's recall - I started training Lola to the whistle on the first day we got her - at her first meal, 7 weeks old. Started off by whistling twice myself, calling her name, and then giving her food. She quickly learned that 2 whistles meant a meal!! - and after a few days I started using a recall metal whistle - 2 gentle pips to start with, plus her name.
She now recognises the whistle from a distance, when she can't hear me call her name. Mind you, if there are birds to chase, or deer scents to follow, I need to be one step ahead of her and call her back sooner. This doesn't always work though !! Coco is Lola's sister, and just as wilful I would imagine - .
I suggest you get hold of a recall whistle ( available on line under "dog whistles " - we bought the same on as we use for Minden, Lola's Aunt - it's called ACME - pitch 11.5 ) An ordinary whistle doesn't work as the sound doesn't carry.
Pip the whistle ONLY when you're feeding her for the first few days - then practise in a safe field, and reward her ONLY if she returns. If she doesn't come back, don't keep blowing the whistle - she obviously hasn't worked out the connection between whistle and food yet, and she'll learn to ignore you. If that happens - go back to whistling when you feed her - and try whistling her back from the garden, or hide upstairs in the loo, with a biscuit or two, and she's downstairs, - whistle her - two short peeps, and watch her try and find you !!
She's a wilful, strong minded and very intelligent dog, - you need to establish who is the boss !!
Have fun, Good Luck, you'll get there !!

Sorry & Barbwire

I was due to meet up with Pauline, Norman and Troy on Sunday but Lauren took acouple of the dogs out, along with Sky (her boyfriends dog who seems to spend alot of time over here) Well Sky managed to get caught up in barbwire that someone had disregarded in the corner of the field. So a trip to the Vet 9 stitches and £170 later
Anyway I didn't get to meet up with Troy, sorry but couldn't leave her until Chris came back from fishing. The funny thing was that there was hardly any bleeding
But Sky is very proud of her wound!!!!!

Coco

Sorry we haven't put anything on here for a long time, I read the blog a lot but on my iPhone which won't allow me to upload to the site.

Coco is getting so big! We can't believe she is only 6 month old. It feels like we have always had her.

She is doing really well. We took her to the beach for the first time last week and she loved it. We let her off the lead for the first time because the beach was quiet and we knew she'd stay close to our friends dog so was not worried about her running away.

We're still not confident about her being off the lead at other times because she loves people so much that we are worried she'd run and jump up at them. Which some people don't like.

We're trying to teach her to come and rewarding her when she does but this can be hit and miss sometimes depending on where we are as she is so interested in smells around her that she doesn't want to come back to us. Any recommendations welcome.

She is a great companion though, very loving and affectionate. She loves cuddling up to us on the sofa. James more than me as he is her fav.

She is great with other dogs now too, loves playing with them, so much so that one day with another dog can wear her out for a couple of days!

Rain storm

We just had a very very heavy rain storm, which left part of the garden like this and the dogs apart from Binks and Majik loved it !!!!

Brodie, Louis & Arthur.

Sharon, what a gorgeous piccie of Louis and his dad. Now I see where he gets his good looks from, he is such a handsome boy. Glad Jim & Brodie enjoyed the grouse count, I thought about going but I still don't have sufficient control over Ghillie. - That is why I haven't returned to the GSP classes yet - I have visions of him disappearing into the distance after anything that moves, on the ground or in the air!!! He is getting better and the control is coming. Much to my amazement, he passed his bronze good citizen at the Crieff Highland Games. I am ashamed to admit that I hadn't the faintest idea what he would have to do, and I was gob-smacked and proud that he passed, so now, we are doing good citizen classes at Gill's 'Naughty Paws' club so he can do his silver and gold. It really helps training with someone who has Munsties and understands the problems that can occur. He is also doing a pre-agility course with Gill. This is all to get basic control over him and it is working and both me and Ghillie are loving it.

I don't write on the blog very often these days but I do read it every day as I love to keep up with all the news and the great things being done by everybody especially the 'Eternals' - what a great year they are having. Ali, you must be so proud.

Ghillie and I are off to the North Yorks Moors in a couple of weeks time to do a week long working trials course. Hopefully this will test out how our control and agility is coming along and get his nose working as he loves tracking. Will let everybody know how things go- maybe a wee article in the newsletter to follow up on the Nat Ap article which hopefuly will be in the next one.

Happy doggong everybody.

Lindsey & Ghillie.

Grouse

I'm enjoying the pictures and stories. Good to read that those that went on the "have a go" day enjoyed themselves. We certainly are enjoying learning how to work our dogs, although I'm still trying to get to grips with the wind directions!

Jim and Brodie went on their first grouse count a few weeks ago and both had a great time albeit exhausted when they got home - the count was on the side of a mountain!

Here's a picture taken at the weekend of Brodie pointing a grouse.

Not a munster but I thought this was a lovely photo of my young 11 month GLP, Louis, meeting his dad, Arthur, for the first time since he was a little pup ....

Coats

Hi Penny, Elsa was spayed after her first season (over a year ago now) and her coat has never changed. She has a lovely smooth coat and this has never changed. Maggie has a wavy coat and always has - this never changed either after she was spayed. Maggie's coat is a different texture to Elsa's. It isn't as oily and much finer which is why it curls I think. I think the way their coat is, is in their genes and spaying won't make an awful lot of difference to it.

Lola is beautiful and the picture of you and her on the beach is very sweet. Elsa is also very cuddly and often lies with her head on your lap.

Gentle Puppy Lola

Hi Ali,
Lola is growing up to be a great big, friendly, confidant, huge overgrown puppy who loves everybody, knows everything that I tell her 'cos she's BRIGHT, but typical munsterlander style, only choses to obey if I'm close or if there's nothing else interesting to seek out!

We love her so much and Minden adores her, whenever they're parted, they search for each other when they come home, and then play really rough stuff on the grass.
We went to Cornwall in late July, Mins loved the sea as usual, but it was Lolly's first try - she found seagulls FANTASTIC !! but getting out of her depth was a bit scary !!

Question please--- Minden's coat is full, soft, wavy, glossy and thick. She hasn't moulted properly for a year or more. She is spayed. Her litter brother Bailey is identical to her, exactly the same marking, same gentle temperament, and is cut. He also has a thick soft curly coat.
Lola, at the moment has a smooth , but increasingly wavy coat, probably turning black like her Mum, but has fanatastic ticks ? on her legs , just like Logi, which I hope will stay.
Our keeper says that the only reason Minden's coat has thickened is because we've had her spayed ( as is Bailey ) and that Lola's coat will lose her flat smooth coat if we spay her.

Minden had a season and then we spayed her, for various reasons. Do you think that spaying a bitch has this much effect on their coats ? I know it does sometimes in spaniels, but I'd like to know more about Munsterlanders , if anybody has any info please ???
Many Thanks,
I had an email today from Neil, Steph & Max who own Maier, they had a wonderful day at the Have A Go Day thoroughly enjoyed it and Maier had a great time, she was really excited to see so many Large Munsterlanders.
Hopefully Steph will put some photos from the day on here and give you more details when she has time.

Congratulations on the Health Test results Kathy that is great news, I got Dee Dee's HUU test results back last week and she is clear, but too young yet to have the other tests, but at least that is one crossed of the list for her now.

Karen I bet the Res CC looks lovely in it's frame, that first one is so special, you have every right to feel proud.
I can remember every one of Narla's Certificates and each one represents a special day with special memories. I am sure you will also have lots of special memories with Mazy yet to come.

Have a go day

I would have loved to take Mazy to the 'have a go' day but knew there was a reason why we couldn't, going to Bournemouth tomorrow. We went to a gundog training session a couple of weeks ago and both Mazy and I enjoyed it, I wish I had more time to do some more training. Hope all going to the 'have a go' day have a good time.

That's great news about Gertie's hips, elbows and eyes. I must get organised and get some of Mazy's tests done.

I ordered a frame for Mazy's first RCC certificate and it now looks very smart and proudly displayed. Everyone at our ringcraft club is very proud of us, I think they thought there wasn't much hope for us when crazy Mazy and I started classes last year.

Hope the puppies settle in their new homes well, they are adorable.

have a go day

Gertie and Kody were going to the 'have a go day' on Sunday, but Kody has come into season. Unfortunately, I can't drive that far alone at the moment, so we won't be going. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to it and I think Gertie would have had a great time. Hopefully there'll be another opportunity to go. I hope that all those who are going have a great time!
I am taking Oscar on Sunday, think it will be a fun day, can't believe the pups are 7 weeks old, time goes by to quick!!

Weekend at Lakes

Had a weekend in the South Lake district. Maier loves to go camping and had a great time swimming in Windermere and Lake Conniston.

The boat in the picture is the steam gondola at Conniston.

We're taking Maier to a Gundog have a go day in Lincs on Sunday, is anyone else from the site going ?

Puppies off to their new homes soon

We can't believe that Tolly's pups are now 7 weeks old and are going to leave us to go to their new homes from this weekend. It's been an amazing, often tiring, experience and the whole family has got involved.
They each have their own lovely characters and we've come to love them very much. We know that they are going to be much loved by their new families, we are also pleased that 3 are staying in Cornwall.

Ali, you've been great with the advice and help that you've given us, thank you so much. We'll keep everyone updated as Addy (the puppy we are keeping) grows up.

Test Results

I've just got Gertie's hip and elbow scores back- hips 3/4 , and elbows are 0. She had her eyes done a couple of months ago and they were clear so all in all I'm very pleased! Nice to know she's a very fit hooligan!!

Hi all, not been on in ages, like you Sandra my computer is on its last legs, I tend to use my iphone but you cant post on the blog via it can only read it!!
It took us ages to get home from National Gundog due to the traffic, we really enjoyed it and Oscar was well behaved so could not ask for more. Lovely to see you Karen and have a chat, Mazy is looking really well and a lot more chilled out, are you doing Darlington or Driffield Karen?
Love all the photos cant believe how much the gentle babies have grown up all so cute, love the picture of Ludo stood posing very handsome boy.
Just heard form another Eternal owner that has had health tests done and they are very good too, I will let them give you the details.
Sandra I know how you feel there are never enough hours in a day!
Pics of some of my lot chasing swallows and digging up at Mudlarks, I really must get photo's of the others too it always seems to be Bree and Zeta at the moment, it's mainly because since I broke my foot Andrew has been doing the walking and I only get out on the walk at Mudlarks, it's flat so can push my chair or use my crutches easily.
Bree is taking after her Daddy Darcy and loving chasing Swallows, there are loads about and she loves it. She is being superb with the hens up there too, she comes into the house and run with me when I collect the eggs, now all I need to do is teach her to collect the eggs, she is a little monkey tho' as she took an egg and gently carried it off and then used her foot to break it open and eat it!!!!
Hope everyone is enjoying the Summer, it is another hot sunny day here, we have had hardly any rain and the grass is burnt off already, we are having to use some of the winter rations for the cattle already as not enough grass for them.
Lovely pictures on here and have pinched the Ludo ones, he is such a handsome boy.

Congratulations

Belated Congratulations from me as well, to all the recent winners.

Sorry I haven't posted much recently, it has been a combination of problems with my computer, it keeps switching itself off !!! So I have only used it when I absolutely have to, as I feel like throwing it out of the window when it suddenly shuts down for no reason.
My daughter Vanessa who is a Teacher is off School at the moment, she has had workmen, carpet fitters, decorator etc.
Round at her house so she has been coming here everyday with her Cavalier Quincy to hide out, Dee Dee thinks it is great fun having visitors, we have also been out and about with the dogs and also shopping for new things for Vanessa's house, Shop till you drop expeditions !!! Great fun but all the shopping does play havoc with the feet.

We got stuck in traffic both going and coming back from National Gundog, there were roads works, but also quite a few prangs and mangled bumpers, I don't think anyone was seriously hurt thankfully, but it did slow the traffic down considerably, I think it took us about an hour longer than normal going and nearly two on the way back.
I think the problem was with the volume of traffic and the roads works, traffic suddenly slowed down and some people were just going too fast to stop in time and ploughed into the back of others, I was just glad to get home without incident to be honest.

But well done to all the winners, and sorry I didn't get chance to come over and congratulate you personally Karen for your Res BCC at Paignton will have a chat next show we are both at hopefully.

Tor we used to have a collie who used to dive in the river Dart like that and the last photo of Ludo is quite majestic when you click on it even if he has got his lip curled up. Very Handsome.

This is a photo of Elva and her new friend George (born on St. George's day), a sprocker from next door

Theo

Took Theo somewhere different today - an iron-age hill fort near Symonds Yat. He got hot chasing deer (we think, never saw them but he dashed off and we heard distant frustrated barking!). So he found a cattle trough to cool down in. He also liked exploring a natural rock tunnel.

Theo is Logi's son and one of Tess' brothers.
