Catch up

Glad you had a safe trip Ali and Gozzi looks like a real gentleman and so handsome - the pups will be fabulous i'm sure.
Karen - keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Sophie - lovely photos of Ilka, she seems like such a character, i will have to meet her in the flesh one day.
Here is a little video of Loki, who will be 6 months old next weekend (can you believe it!). He is such a cuddly soft mannered boy, my little superstar.

Just been

for a lovely little walk (can't go far because Domino is lead walking this week) in the New Forest. It was freezing up there though and very bleak, cleared my head a bit though from this stuffy cold I've got. I had heard that they are trying to ban dog walkers on the forest, will be a shame if they manage to put that in place. Domino loves it up there. I tried to take the camera but the batteries are flat, so I might see if I can get up there again in the morning before I go home.

Whoops Ali, I was typing the same time as you I think, welcome home, Gozzi looks beautiful, can't wait for one of Diva's puppies.

Dog welfare Code of Conduct

Thank you for posting that Elle, I hadn't seen the consultation. Personally I think it's a good code of practice document, the only other acts like it that I have been aware of are the dog control act and the dangerous dogs act which don't address the general welfare of dogs and are only referred to when a problem arises. I'm sure some people decide to get a dog and think they'll learn how to look after it as they go along. If they have to be made aware of this Code of Conduct before owning a dog, hopefully the dog might get a better start in life than some do. I would think it'll help the RSPCA reinforce the work it does too. When I was a child we used to have to buy a dog licence, although I'm not sure what the purpose of that was, is this a kind of replacement for that but with some rules to go with it?

Back from Sweden

We are back from Sweden and Diva has been mated to Gozzi, Vassfjardens Garp. we had a wnderful trip and was so pleased to meet such a handsome, loving, well mannered boy, a real gentleman. Basically he has exceeded all expectations and now it's fingers crossed for a beautiful litter of puppies. Can't believe we did it but we have!!!!! Only regret is that Judith couldn't come but another time, we will fly over in February to see Annnica's puppies which are due the day before Diva's. Lotta and Annica are coming over to see my babies too so no doubt I have made friends for life over in Sweden.
Babies are due (if all goes according to plan!) January 27th, so please keep everything crossed that she takes and holds. Thanks for all the support everyone and to everyone who took the time to check in with James and me on my mobile. James second mum Judith kept a close eye on him!!
More pictures to come later.

DEFRA

Elle, I was aware that DEFRA were working on this (the project was launched over 2 yrs ago), a large team (inc vets) was put together to look at all types of animal husbandry, from domestic to farm animals. From what I read when it was first started, it was aimed at people new to having animals but also to support the RSPCA in their new legislation. The only reason I knew about it was because I met one of the vets who was on the Bovine team.....

Unusual for me thesedays! LOL

Not usual for me to post thesedays, as most of you know I've been busy with other things, (not computer related!) BUT have had a lot of feedback from the Newspage about this article/proposal and wondered what you all think of it.....

comments I have had range from "who is it aimed at?" to "legislation for the sake of it" and - questions such as "how will it affect dog shows in Summer"

so - just wondered - what do you think... http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/welfare-dogs-cop/index.htm

Sophie I think it is once they get to a year old you can start agility. Fantastic pictures! Ilka looks like so much fun!
Messing with the sofa cushions she got a bit of white paint on her head I've been painting an agility jump ps when can you start doing agility with them did know but can't remember.
Went dogging in, it went very well again, put up 5 pheasants didn't chase any, was not sure about being able to take her beating as well as picking up but looking ok to. If she carries on like this might do some spring pointing tests with her.

Been so busy on hear.......

......that I can't keep up (which is great)
Love all the puppy pics very cute and Taleula is beutiful so like Prima.
Dad is so busy that we have not managed to go dogging in yet but we are goin to try and make it today, the retrieveing is coming on she now almost tries to put the dummie in your hand, and will sit off lead while Sid's retreiving.
Dog training went well, definatly getting some where, to start with she was a little wound up cos it was chaos (a mad GSD which Brynn was sorting out) so put her on the ground and got her to relax for a few seconds and after that she was happier and better even though it was all still choas dogs running around off leads peeing ect and little border terrier flew in to her and she did nothing and it was a big class, but when a man went to stoke her she got funny with him she still does not like stange mens hands coming from no where, so had to put her on the ground again to settle her down which seems to be the only way so far to settle her down but at least it seemed to work.
Might try and put a pic or two up or a video later.

I love stollen but without the marzipan in it. I always get a few at the Christmas Market in Edinburgh, it runs throughout December and I have to visit several times each year because the atmosphere is the best! That and the mulled wine and crepes with chocolate spread and banana... yummy!

German Christmas food

Lidle also do stollen, marzipan iced biscuits Lebenkuchen and other German Christmas treats.
On the 5th stollen so far this year. Just SOOOOO good.
Oh Lyn, give me a shout when Ghillie is old enough for wee walks, I bet he will love seeing other munsters. They really do know their own breed, Sharon and Jim will be able to vouch for that for when he first met Ceilidh! Glad he is getting there with toilet training and that nearly all of the dogs are coming around to him being there. Paddy now plays properly with tug toys with Ceilidh which is a new thing, she is really bringing him out of his shell.

Welcome Loudon

Good to have you on here and great pictures, she looks so similar to Prima! Really beautiful!

Jo where is Andy that he might not be home for Christmas? Beef wellington is amazing but this year I am going out for christmas dinner. My family do it a year away and a year all at home so we can all get together every other year and on the inbetween year (this year) my parents go to my granny and go she takes them down for dinner so I am tagging along with them this year so it should be good.

Bits an' Bobs.

Those huskies are beautiful ..are you really getting the dark one Judith or is it just wishful thinking lol.
Jo you must be so excited about Christmas with all your family around you, I hope you have a wonderful time.
Talking of Christmas...wish I didn't have to....we have banned it this year..... I love Aldi's stuff. It is fantastic quality...unfortunately I have a particular passion for Stollen and the Moser 85% dark chocolate bars. It is a disaster for me to go inot their stores at this time of year. After all my hard work to lose weight, I have now put on 1/2 a stone!!!! I am sure it will go again now I have Ghillie.
Ghillie is absolutely amazing, after my initial panic about house-training, he takes himself off outside to wee and pooh 90% of the time. Accidents only happen when he is mega excited or has a scare or if he forgets and I am not quick enough to get him out. He eats like a horse and is learning so fast it is terrifying. I thought collies were fast but he is unbelievable and so much fun. Last night Judo decided to play with him in earnest for the first time and they went at it hammer and tongs...no holds barred, Ghillie charging round the house at the speed of light with Judo after him. I think Judo will be the one to teach him manners. My hands are covered in puncture wounds!!! I do the yelping and ignoring but it doesn't seem to have any effect. He bit Judo's ear last night and Judo floored him and I swear he was gentler later. Jig will not tolerate him still ..he is so jealous but Jess and Flyn seem to be coping generally. Hope to have more piccies later.
Karen...sorry to hear about Domino...hope she is a little better this morning now that the pain killers are starting to work.
Sharon, it was so lucky that Jim was with Brodie when those labs attacked. I cannot understand people who let their dogs run loose when they are like that...they should at least have been muzzled. Brodie was lucky..it could have been devastating.
All for now...it sounds like bedlam rules downstairs, so I better go and sort it out.
Lindsey

Those Huskies

are gorgeous, I like the black one too.

Back

from the vet with Domino. Hopefully it's just a muscle strain, the vet said the muscles in her back legs were tight. So painkillers, lead walking for a week and see how she goes.

And

You are so slim, Lins
Wow, a couple of days off the computer and I sure am far behind, had to do a lot of reading! Karen, I sure hope Domino is feeling better, do you know yet why she feels so bad? Hope she's just having an off day!
Judith, those husky pups are georgeous! Did you say you bought one?
I have my 3 siblings coming from Edmonton on Dec. 12 for the weekend and we are having a early Christmas with them. This is the first time they have come to Kelowna all at the same time, should be fun. We will celebrate Christmas on the 25th also for my immediate family, and I sure hope Andy will be home for that, it's touch and go this year, cross your fingers!
Lula is a very pretty girl, sorry to hear about her friend... is Lula lonely?
Lindsay, Ghillie looks like a sweetie, and i'm sure she is giving the collies a hard time! I found my two munsters were way harder to housetrain than any of my other dogs, but once they catch on that is it. Jo

Aldi Stuff

Judith, I bought the same 3 birds in one last year, and the stuffed turkey crown, and the beef wellington - all were delicious and well worth the money - enjoy!

Loudon, welcome! Lula is so obviously a Blitzan, and lovely.
OMG they are beautiful puppies! As is little Ghillie!!! He looks like he is settling in well now!
Sharon, poor Brodie being attacked! I have never seen and black and choc labs there together before especially agressive ones. Will keep an eye out though. I did get your email Sharon and will try to get round to replying soon I promise.
Karen, I think I remember you saying you couldn't make it to the Bronze test when your class were doing it. Have you managed to get another time arranged? I am sure Maggie will be able to do it without a problem.

We Have

Been out looking at puppies today, they are lovely, the little black bitch with blue eyes is the one both Lauren and I chose. Also is a pic of mum and dad.
It was Ali's post that I read which said well done to Maggie and Brodie on their awards, so it's her fault.!!!!

OK

I am going mad, Ali says I've been mad for years but hay ho. I am sure i read that you had passed it Karen. I am sure you will. Strider and Summer managed it back in September, still trying to work out how Strider did manage it, he is not the brightest match in the box !!!!

Karen

I have looked a couple of times to see where you said that Maggie had got her Bronze. I think we've got confused with Brodie getting his Bronze and Maggie going for Silver.

Christmas, I can't get into shopping yet, I'm hoping to catch up with some work so I can take a day out shopping. We have in-laws visiting which is unusual, we normally spend Christmas just the family.

Not getting much done today, Domino's not well, not sure what's wrong, she's very lethargic and stiff so off to the vets later. Can't concentrate for worrying. She was fine yesterday, went to the social group and she was OK there.

What award?

Seems to be some confusion - Maggie has NOT done her Bronze yet. I am at training classes at the moment and the trainer there thought that she was past the bronze standard needed to take the test and so has moved me up to the next class who are all working for their silver - I will hopefully be able to take our bronze and silver at the end. Fingers crossed - I'd feel a right idiot if she failed it now!!!! (Don't worry - if I get it I will plaster it up on here in big writing as I will be so proud!!!!!)

Lovely photos of Ceilidh, Elspeth - nice to hear from you again, I hope you are all well.

Ghillie is gorgeous, hope the 'potty' training is going well. It is much easier in the summer months. Had Maggie in March and so don't remember is being too much of a problem although you do have to be watching them a lot!

Tallulah is a pretty girl, Loudon.

As for Christmas - I have got one present so far! Nightmare. We too are having a house full at Christmas Judith. I have my husband Sister and kids coming over. I am not a Christmas person I'm afraid, bit of a Scrooge. I don't mind the day itself, it's just the huge build up that goes before it.

Hi Loudon

Has Karen said, Ali is away at the moment, I am sure she will be in touch when she gets back. Your girl looks lovely, she's like her mum.
I have to stay in today until my dog food is delivered, hate it when they cant give you a time.
Back to work tomorrow for another 5 days but i get an extra day off in 2 weeks time.
Anybody done any Christmas shopping yet ? Must say now that my children are older it is not the same. But i will have a house full for Christmas dinner this year. Two of Simon's house mates are also coming and my mother=in=law so should be fun.
Joanne how are you ?
And Karen with Maggie well done on your award sorry i missed that bit.
Going back to Christmas I went to Aldi yesterday and bought one of those 3 bird stuffed things Turkey, Duck and Chicken they have had on the telly, thought we would try it and if nice get them for Christmas dinner.Think we would need 2 but will see how it carves up.But it does look nice and only £9.99 !!

Tuesday 25 November 2008

Hello Loudon

Welcome here, Ali is away until the end of the week so you probably won't see post from her until then. Lovely photos of Lula. Is she Prima's sister? Sorry to hear you've lost Monty, that is a good age though isn't it, though none of them live long enough for any of us.

I've got Domino (Wintersmorn Breeze), not one of Ali's but related but do hope to have one of Ali's puppies soon.

Taleulah (Absolutely Classy)

Hi Ali - still have not quite got to grips with blogging!! I typed a message and then attached 3 pics of Lula but when I "published" the text did not appear. I was asking whether it would be possible to find her a mate when she next comes into season. She was due in October but no sign yet and if she is that late it would mean having to wait until next June which would then interfere with next season's shooting. What do you think?
By the way Monty, my previous Munsterlander (not one of yours), died three weeks ago, just before his 14th birthday. He had a great life as a working/family dog and will be much missed by us all. He is buried next to my seat overlooking the beautiful South Downs, where I retreat to contemplate the problems of the world!!
Loudon

Taleula (Absolutely Classy)

Ghilli

Lindsey, he looks adorable, I'm sooo jealous! Good that the others are accepting him now, I pity you having to take urine samples from him, I think it would be difficult enough to get one from Louis or Cassie, but a wriggly pup..........

Poor Ali, it looks beautiful but only if you're out playing in it - not driving!

This

This where Ali is at the moment, hope she got her thermals on !!!!!

Hello Ghillie!

Ghillie looks so cute Lindsey. I can see more flecks starting to show through from the first pic you showed us. I’m glad the others are starting to accept him more. It’s good that he’s sleeping all night too. I remember reading in a book it is their natural instinct to cry through the first night as it’s a call so that their pack knows where to find them. Fortunately for us either Brodie had either lost that natural instinct or was too tired with the days drive that he slept all night apart from one toilet break.
I’m sure when we first got Brodie he knew he shouldn’t pee in the house but sometimes he just wasn’t able to hold it in long enough. Anytime I thought he was about to squat slightly I scooped him up and ran outside with him. Many a time I’d hear Jim shouting the poor wee sole was only about to sit! If he went near the window or the living room door it was also an indication he may need to go. You do need to keep your eye on them constantly though, I remember feeling sorry for him if he had a little accident and I hadn’t being paying attention. Hopefully Ghillie will start to show some indication that he needs to go soon and you’ll just need to be fast in getting him outside :) Shame it's November and cold - we had the sunny month of May which made toilet training a little more pleasant :)

I enjoyed the photos of Ilka, especially the ones at the window. It looked like you were getting plenty of rain that day Sophie. We have 2 old cats (12 and 14). I’m surprised at how well they get on with Brodie especially due to their age, they had no previous experience of dogs and the fact that Brodie is rather excitable. He’s recently got extremely friendly with the younger cat, and the pair of them love to rub against each other and Brodie has taken to cleaning her.

Elspeth, Nice pics of Paddy and Ceilidh. I think I know the leg jumping behavior you describe. I was just talking to Jim about that behavior last night because Brodie has gotten friendly with a golden lab on one of my regular walks and the pair of them do it together. I’d never seen Brodie do it with another dog before. He gets on great with this lab but is very wary of brown or black ones. He was attacked in devilla a few weeks back by both a black and brown lab. Luckily Jim was doing some lead work with Brodie so they were side-by-side when the dogs went for him. Jim sent the dogs flying with one strong kick then when one was coming back again it’s owner did exactly the same as Jim did, then the owners put them on leads and apologized. It sounded like it was not the first time their dogs have attacked, in fact it sounded like it was fairly regular, so beware if you are in devilla of a black and brown lab together as the attack was completely unprovoked – Brodie had been walking calmly on lead beside Jim and hadn’t even looked at the other dogs. We saw the couple the following week and both their dogs were on leads.

I hope the eye is looking and seeing a bit better now Rosie. Good luck for the next op.

I’m away Christmas shopping this Sunday with my daughter. I haven’t been shopping since I got Brodie so it should be a fun day!

Ghillie

How gorgeous is he? Thanks for posting the pics Lyn. Hope the wee problem sorts itself, Domino had anti b's when she was young as she had Cystitis, they didn't do her any harm.

Glad your other dogs are accepting him OK.

Ceilidh and Ilka are looking lovely too. I'm not good with taking pics this week, must get the camera out. Social group was good this morning, though Domino still has a bit of an "issue" with and excitable Collie, she only tells it off once though, no idea why. In two weeks the group is having a Xmas themed group so I'll take my camera then.

Ghillie

As promised Ghillie pics with and without 'pals'.

Thanks for the peeing advice girls. Had an email last night saying that a couple of the pups had urinary infections so took a sample to vets this morning...it was the colour of dirty washing up water!! However they couldn't find anything abnormal even on microscopic examination, just dead cells and debris which they reckon accounted for the colour. They have however put him on antibiotics and I have to take another sample in a weeks time. Have you tried getting a sample from a squirmingly ecstatic pup at the first early morning greeting!!!!!! I have to admit to being a bit unsettled about giving antibiotics to such a young pup; I suppose better safe than sorry....what do you all think??

We haven't had a sound out of him at night since the first night, he is so good.

This morning Judo was playing tug of war with him so I guess they are starting to accept him now.

Hi

Ilka says thanks Judith and Elspeth, Ceilidh is looking lovely too, looks like shes filling out more, nice to see some pics of her on hear again.
Molland yes hes now 4.5 kg (heavier than Jack my ginger cat) when we found him he was under 1/2 a kg though he is now a bit fat, he scrounges like a dog and will eat all sorts though think this could have been cos he was starving and also he still suckles on his bed, he should have been with his mum longer. We've not yet told him about his xmas present (a trip to the vets)
And should be 'dogging in' again today (hopefully) so will say how it goes there should be some more pheasants about now and apparently there were only two good picking up dogs on Saturday when Dad was shooting so an Ilka will definitely be needed.

Forgot to say happy birthday keisha yesterday. Just a few pics of Ceilidh and Paddy on run abouts. He really is coming out of his shell now and has started to initiate the playing and now does the wavy front leg jump at her too which he has obviously learned from her. I will try to remember the camera next time they are doing it to show you what i mean. So does anyone have anything exciting planned for the weekend? I am planning on heading up to the snow again so should get some more great pictures. Ilka is looking great Sophie! She still has a good coat, Ceilidh is starting to grow hers back now thank goodness, she was so pink underneath!

Monday 24 November 2008

Nice to hear from you Elspeth, hope you and Ceilidh are OK.

Sophie, Molland looks a little minx, Domino is actually scared of our 12 year old cat and would probably let her have a bone if she wanted it.

It's been so cold here today and the fire won't light at the moment, just trying again, the wind must be blowing the wrong way. Off to our social group tomorrow with Domino's new friends, I hope she doesn't have a go at a Collie tomorrow like she usually does. We might not be going though, my son went to bed at 5pm tonight not feeling well, very unusual.

Ghillie sounds fun, I can't remember how we taught Domino to wee outside, I know it was freezing (January) and we spent a lot of time popping outside with her until she got the message. I think we had some newspaper by the back door for any accidents. I do remember she cried all night when we brought her home though. Would love to see some photos.

like

The piccs of Ilka, she is turning into one lovely young lady. And Molland boy he has grown.
Would also love to see some pics of Ghillie please.
Hi Elspeth.
It is freezing cold here today and very very windy.
Hope the eye gets better soon Rosie.
Karen well done on your G C Award.

Happy Birthday

Keisha and Domino sorry its so late.
Hi Elspeth good to have you back.
Loads of great pics on hear.
Ok a few pics shes not got the greatest coat at the mo but it's starting to grow back longer.

And Molland (now nick named 'Dennis the Mennis')
He's chewing Ilka's chew (he thinks hes a dog) as you can see Ilka was not happy with it, soon after she got it back.

Good luck with Ghillie love to see pics.

Catch up / toilet training

So sorry I have not been on here in ages, i have been reading but not posted so instead of listing everything i will just say hello to everyone, happy birthday Domino and any others, welldone for all the achievements recently. I Don't want to miss anything out so hopefully that general note will do the trick.
House training... well where is Ghillie sleeping? The reason I ask is because I had Ceilidh in the bedroom so i could hear when she woke and rush her outside, that helped a lot toward toilet training. Also if you put him out after a meal, when he wakes up during day and if he gets playful and overly excited it normally ends up with an accident too from what I can remember. Do you treat him when he does wee outside? That might help. Pop up pics when you can!

Hope everyone is well and that Ali and Diva are enjoying their trip

BRODIE & GHILLIE

Sharon, I can't believe how big Brodie has got...he is lovely...smashing photos. Congratulations on his bronze award by the way. Very well done to you Jim and Brodie....I know for sure it was a 3-way effort.
Well, Ghillie has arrived. 4 very very p***** off Border Collies in residence. Jig sticks his nose in the air and just pretends he is a bad figment of his imagination, Judo stalks him constantly....growling non-stop with tail wagging like mad at the other end. Poor Flyn appears to have been ear-marked as mother substitute with Ghillie constantly looking for the milk bar, then trying to mount him!!!! - at 7 weeks!!!!! and finally curling up and going to sleep beside him. Flyn looks at us so long sufferingly but even when I call him up on the settee he usually gets back down and curls up looking brow beaten....a seriously masochistic collie. Jess has seen it all before and at 12 years old doesn't seem to give a toss. Ghillie screamed holy s*** all night the first night so Sunday morning saw me sheepishly knocking on the neighbours door with a large bouquet of flowers and an apology only to be told they never heard a thing!!! Last night there wasn't a sound, I think he was totally exhausted after a very full day. I seem to be having more trouble with the housetraining than I did with the collies. He always goes out for a pooh but doesn't seem to get the idea that he needs to go out to wee and generally just goes when he gets the urge...with no warning or signals. Think its probably my fault...getting older and not as quick off the mark as I used to be...... Guess we'll get there in the end. Got him checked over by my vet this morning who thought he was absolutely gorgeous...which he is. Will try to get some piccies on later.
Lindsey

Lindsey

sorry

Hope everyone is well and sorry for missind Domino's Birthday. Love the pics of Brodie it would be lovely to meet up with some of Ringo's brothers next year. I had my first cataract operation on Rhursday and I'm having trouble seeing to type sorry for errors.
My eye looks like I had a round with Ricky Hatton really bloodshot and a bit puffy I cna't wait to get the other one done so I can see properly again.

Morning

Happy Birthday to Domino - sorry it's late! She doesn't look 8, Tilly is 9, 10 in March but is really showing her age. Hope she had a good birthday and her lameness goes before training tomorrow.

My mother is looking after my sister's black lab, Tiesle for two weeks as my sister has gone to India for her husband's nephews wedding. Tiesle is so sweet, a real stable influence on Maggie and Nellie and walking her this weekend has been great for Maggie. I think I want to keep her! She is from a working strain and so obedient and calm, great with people and calm around other dogs.

Sharon, lovely pictures of Brodie.

Still haven't taken Maggie out yet as the weather is horrible and she is sitting looking at me so think I will have to get going. Training class tonight so need to wear her out!

Hope the audit goes well Judith.

Sunday 23 November 2008

Thank you

for Domino's birthday wishes. She had a lovely day with lots of treats.

Judith, the large customers are a pain aren't they. Richard's work have similar customers and it always causes more work. Hope this audit goes smoothly.

Hopefully I'm taking Domino to the social group on Tuesday for some more socialising, although she is a bit lame today so hope she feels better by then. Jo, I think I just have to be careful with Domino and picking up scents during the wet colder weather. She's 8 now, so I don't think I will change her ways too much, but will try. At least she seems to come back to me as long as I call her before she thinks about running off. I just have to keep my wits about me. She wasn't half as much trouble in the Spring/Summer months.

Sorry

It's late but HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOMINO . Just got back in from work, not my day to work but have big new customer coming to look around and audit us at the start of the week so need to make sure paperwork is up to date. Tesco came in to do an audit 2 weeks ago, just turned up on the Monday morning, out of the blue, my department failed because our paperwork was not in depth enough for them.

Bye for now

Happy Birthday Domino, sorry I didn't get on here yesterday, but also well done to Brodie and Maggie and your Good citizen awards too. You are all so busy it's great! Lovely pictures on here again.
Well I am off for a week now, so sorry will not be on here or answering my e mails, I will have my mobile with me if I am needed. Should be home by Friday if not Saturday morning, lovely weather for it, ope no one is snowed in too badly. Keep things ticking along for me and there will be plenty of pictures from me when I return.

Brodie Pics

A lovely picture of Domino - Happy 8th Birthday!

At last some pics of Brodie on today's walk. I've been using his frisbie recently to keep his attention on walks and that's been helping. When I shout "ready-steady" he knows it's about to get thrown and comes running to me. Brodie isn't interested in food on a walk either.

Karen, If Maggie is going to do her Bronze from what I've read I'm sure she'll pass no problem.

A couple in-doors of Brodie arranging the cushions to get comfy. Due to the flash, he's got green eyes in both!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOMINO! Beautiful picture, I love the look on her face! The catching scent and taking off like a rocket is the hunting dog thing to do, they get sooooo excited they can't seem to help it, but it is very frustrating and scary sometimes, and Duke did it last spring after coyotes or deer, not sure which cause it was so fast and up the mountain. But he got it big trouble when he came back and he knew he was in s**t. I have to say I haven't had a problem since, they still take off but come back immediately when told to.
My father in law used to breed and had many German shorthired pointers and my husband told me once about "Prince" who was way too hyper to hunt. They found out on one trip when he took off and then came back through camp with a young elk running full speed and almost running over dad. In Canada you cannot hunt large game with a dog only birds, so it's a good thing a warden was not around or he would of thought Prince was trained to do this! This dog was retired when they returned home! Oh the joys of dogs!
Joanne
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOMINO 8 YEARS OLD TODAY

Also

Well done Brodie on your Bronze award xxxx
And to Sharon & Jim for all your training.

Thank You

Thank you all for your lovely comments on my Princess Keisha.
The main trouble with her is that she knows she is beautiful an acts very much like a Princess but she is still not too proud to get very very muddy and dirty, after all mud is a beauty treatment.!!
Like has been said before Keisha is the only Munster that i have had in last 24 years to get under my husband skin.
I think they bonded when she was born. She came out screaming and the puppy that came straight after had alittle trouble breathing, so Keisha was handed to Tony to dry off and to give to Majik, while i seen to the other puppy.
I must also say that Beecham is also very special being Majik's first born and the first Munster that i had help bring into he world.
Lovely photos and congratulations on Brodie getting the Bronze.

Karen, you know I have trouble with Domino at the moment keeping control of her. This morning we went out with friends, a Cockerpoo and a Flat Coat/Labrador and I am very careful at the moment to notice when Domino is losing awareness of where I am. In the first field we go into, she's OK, nose to the ground all the time, but doesn't stray too far. When we get to the end of the field, she picks up some very strong scent and she starts getting very excited and I can sense her about to run off. So at the moment I call her back and keep her on the lead, I find she comes back fine as long as I catch her before she goes off on one. I've seen several deer in the last couple of weeks, so I know there are wandering these fields and I think the wet ground makes the scent stronger. I haven't even tried training to the whistle yet, I'm just trying to get a bit more control at home.

Though in the house, Domino won't let me out of her sight at the moment, not sure why. Also at the social group, she rarely strays more than a few yards from me and the field isn't particulary well fenced, so she could easily nip off if she wanted. I hope to join the training class in January (it's full at the moment) which is also held outside. Mind you, Domino is 8 years old on Saturday, so I don't expect miracles, but good practice for when the new dog comes along.

Keeping Control

Happy Birthday to Keisha and Beecham - sorry it's late, lovely picture of Beecham and Logi - very handsome boys. Nice to see you on here Sue - Sorry the weather was so bad in Scotland.

Sharon - contratulataions on Brodie getting the Bronze, hope Maggie does as well when she does it. She is going to be two in February and she is my first Munster, though not first dog and totally new experience! My family have owned Visla's and GSP before so it's not the first time I have experienced gun dogs but none quite as mad as a munster!

I was feeling brave this morning and decided to venture towards Holton Wood where the pheasants gather. I kept her close though not on a lead and she did run into a flock at one point but came again when I called her. I reward her with a ball not treats as she isn't interested in treats, she gets one throw and then it's back in my pocket. When I feel I'm losing control like this morning I do some close training. This morning after she came back the first time I could tell she was in that zone she gets into and beginning not to listen so I blew the stop whistle. Her bottom very slowly went to the ground and she didn't turn to face me but then gradually looked behind her to me as if to say 'WHAT NOW'. I told her to stay (very firmly) and made her wait a minute. She gradually began to focus back on me again as I could see she wasn't looking around her, at which point I walked towards her and then rewarded her with the ball. After that I thought I shouldn't push it any more and headed home. I find it such hard work keeping her attention at the moment - it's a constant battle and if I relax for a minute she is gone and I've lost. Does anyone else have this difficulty?
Happy birthday Keisha! You are a very beautiful princess! Lovely coloring and markings, make sure you get whatever you want today!!!

Birthdays

This is of Princess Keisha, with her Daddy Logi, Granny Leah and Great Granny Tarka. Then we have the birthday boy, Beecham with his Daddy Logi.

Congratulations to Sharon, Jim and Brodie on passing the bronze! Belated Happy Birthday to Keisha, she's a beauty Judith. Apologies to anyone I've missed, despite having a week off work I seem to be really busy!

Happy 4th Birthday Sister!

Beecham, September 2008

Beecham wishes his sister Keisha a very happy birthday (sorry it's a day late). He & Bosco were very excited about having pancakes as a birthday treat last night.

Ali/Judith - the rain was torrential in Scotland last week, so I only used the small camera; I'm not sure if I got anything good and, sadly, I missed Beecham standing in the water pointing - we think it was an otter as someone had seen tracks on the beach earlier. However, I did manage to take hundreds of shots on Bamburgh beach on the way home, so hopefully I will have got something reasonable there for you both, but I haven't had time to look, yet.

We stopped off to see Beecham's new nephew & niece puppies on the way down. Ghillie is lovely and it is very exciting to know that we will be able to hear about him.

I hope all goes well with Diva & Prima, Ali.

I haven't posted for ages, but I have been reading - so HELLO everyone.
Happy Birthday Mum from Brodie.

I’ve not had a chance to post for a while but I do try to have a quick read every day to see how everyone’s doing.

Ali, I’m pleased to hear the girls are in season, sounds like having both litters at the same time will be a lot of hard work but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I hope your feeling well again.

Judith, Rosie, It was nice to see Jiggy, Troy and Ringo together in the picture. Hopefully at some event next year Brodie will have a chance to meet his family again. A week or so ago Brodie was 30kg and 26inch high so fairly similar to what Ringo is.

Lyndsey, your little boy looked lovely, and I liked the names you’d both chosen. I’m thinking it’s this weekend you collect him so you must be getting excited. And glad to hear you finally convinced Frank to have 2 munsters. You will cope no problem with 2 young dogs, you both have so much experience. If you’ve ever any free time I could do with your advice to help with Brodie!

Maggie’s training sounds like it is coming along really well. I was very impressed that she returned to whistle after spotting the pheasants. I bet it made it so much more satisfying that the farmer was there to see it. What age is she again? I’m thinking she’s under 2 years and your first dog but maybe I’m getting confused with someone else?

Sophie it sounds like your making good progress with your retrieves. In the last month Brodie has come on great with his. We’ve just started introducing 2 dummies and he’s finding that more difficult so we’re working on that with him right now.

Brodie and Jim passed their Bronze last night :) I don’t know who got the raw deal but I suspect it was me. I took him out for a 3 hour play and train session to try and tire him about before the test as Brodie gets so excited at training; and Jim took him for the test. Luckily the examiner got caught in a traffic jam and was 40 minutes late so it gave Brodie plenty of time to calm down. I was impressed/shocked he did so well and passed each part first time.

Sorry I’ve no pictures. My daughter is back at uni with her good camera and we’re not having much luck taking anything with the one we have but we’ll try again at the weekend.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

KEISHA

Happy Birthday to Keisha. Do you know that Ghillie's puppy markings are identical to Keishas as a pup. They are related and if he turns out half as gorgeous as Keisha, I will be delighted. Only 2 days to go now till he comes home...so excited.

Training

I was only thinking the other day Karen that I might have to find another Dog Trainer, I think Georgia would be calmer trained outside, It's not that she wont do what you want her to do it's just all the barking while she's waiting her turn.
I live closer to Christchurch than Bournemouth really, there is so many walks in the area and I wouldn't move far away just where the traffic is less busy. I love the area because you have everything here 1 mile to the beach, 1 mile the other way to the shops 10mins walk to the river and meadow 3 miles to the forest and 3 miles the other way to the busy pubs and night clubs not that I go in there much only once a month but my 18yr old and the 16yr old love it and threw into a rage when my husband got posted to Yorkshire and we went to look at colleges last for them to move to a little village. They thought their world had come to an end and refused to come, but luck came and my husband got a posting to Wilton Salisbury so we get to see him everyday now.
There are some nice villages close to Salisbury that I like the look of.
Nice photo of the dogs sat together Karen they look like they get on well, going to phone my cousin now as she has just bought her new puppy home, she has a little westie ,and sent me a pic on the phone, it looks so cute, good job she lives in Kent as I would be kidnapping it.
Hi I am lucky too living just out side a little village and am near exmoor but sounds like Georgia still has a good time with all those walks and yes having more than one dogs is great they love to play.
Great pics Karen.
Training is still going well with Ilka shes getting good at dummie retrieves, waits for them to be thrown then waits for you to say 'fetch it on' then off she goes and brings it back, she had not been quite bringing it to hand and dropping it but I am working on it and she is better and now is either dropping it right at your feet or giving it to hand and yesterday we got her carrying a pheasant around which she has not done before, she carries it quite nicely but as it's a whole lot more interesting than a dummie she is a little bit wanting to keep for her self so not retrieving it like a dummie yet but it was her first time carrying it so all went well really.
Good luck with the training Karen and Domino, I'm hoping the taking Ilka to a shoot with dogs and men that she might be 'funny about' will be good for her and aparently they are getting short of good dogs on the shoot so I think Ilka will be useful when shes up to it.

Tuesday 18 November 2008

Karen, your mother's whippet looks just like Daisy, my mum's whippet. I will get a photo of her to show you.

Arlene, I had the same trouble with Domino when we went training except she would look around the hall and try to bark at any collies that were there while she was waiting her turn. I was advised that training in a hall wasn't the right environment for a Munsterlander, so now we've started going to a social group, which is loads of dogs running round a field, with some socialising and training mixed in. We hope to join the training class in January which will also be held outside. Domino is so much better in this environment. Vets should know what the dog breeds are, but I don't think my vets knew what they were until they met Ali's dogs.

I've climbed Snowdon twice, not with a dog though and in the middle of summer doing the Three Peaks Challenge (this was long ago when I was fit). The weather was pretty bad up there even that time of year

Joanne, hope you feel better now, there are some nasty bugs going around here at the moment, luckily we've been well so far.

I've got a busy week, all the usual things and then Domino's birthday on Saturday and Charlotte's on Sunday, so don't expect to see me around much this weekend.

An afternoon strole

Arlene, sounds like you have some nice walks even though you live in a built up area and Georgia has good holidays too! We live in a small village surround by countryside but in the shooting season like now it's difficult to know where to go and a lot of the fields are horrible rough plough at the moment so feeling a bit trapped. Luckily though my mother who lives next door owns a couple of paddocks out the back and so often in the afternoon we will take a strole around them where she often finds rabbits! In the morning it's a trip in the car to a local country park. Roll on spring! The pictures above were taken in the paddocks this afternoon.

Sorry to hear you have been unwell Joanne - hope you are feeling better now.
