Why a Munster
Like many I grew up with dogs, my mother used to breed and show Dobes but had changed breeds when her last one died and by then had a Visla, my sister had a GSP and so when we moved here and I knew I wanted a larger dog (we only had Tilly a cavalier at the time) my family urged me to get a gun dog. I had walked and looked after Poppy(GSP) and Sabie (visla) many times and loved taking them out on walks - loved the way the hunted and walks were so much fun when with them. So when Frank said we could get a dog I took a breed book I had off the shelf and literally just went through the breeds. I stopped a the Large Munsterlander - never heard of this one before, but loved the picture of one in the book. I rang Frank and he said he knew of the breed and agreed they were a good looking dog. That weekend we had decided it was the dog for us but had yet to meet one. I found out there was a dog trainer living fairly near us who owned one and gave her a ring. She spoke to me for about 40 mins about her boy, who she obviously adored. She asked about my situation and thought it would be the right breed for us. She did mention the fact they loved mud, they had boundless energy and were an intelligent breed that needed a lot of stimulation, but all I heard was how much she loved him in her voice and I was sold. We went on to Champ dogs and the Kennel club web site and found a breeder not too far - when we rang she said she had one bitch left and we were driving down to see her at four weeks the following weekend. When we met her dogs it was the first time we had ever seen a Munster and I was in love. I particularly liked her mother Freya and was told Maggie would be very similar in colour which she is - I was sold and don't think I slept much for the next four weeks! I think getting a Munster was the best decision I ever made and although I have only had her for two years I have never loved a dog so much - that is until Elsa came along!
