Peter

Many thanks for explaining that, after re-reading the second email it makes sense to me now.

However, I have been doing a lot of reading recently and the book I'm reading at the moment is 'The Versatile Gundog' by Guy Wallace. He says in one chapter about exercising a puppy between 12 and 16 weeks and I quote: ' It never fails to surprise me how many people buy a pup that they want for the express purposeof getting out and hunting - and then spend all their time making sure that is does the complete opposite by keeping it glued to thier side or sitting at their feet'. He suggests letting it run free, let it chase rabbits, blackbirds whatever and it will learn about the wind and to hunt and scent, things we cannot teach them but must learn for themselves. Then he says when they are 4 or 5 months and gets too independent to 'put it on ice' and confine it to the garden.

I mention this because you mention restricting 'free running'. I think the more I read the more I get confused! Any chance of you explaining this to me?
