I wonder if they were calmer in the candle light because of the type of bulbs we are now using. All of the energy efficient flourescent lamps flicker at 100 times a second and I wonder if dogs can see this. Some humans can but not many, but, everyone can be aware of this even though most people cannot see it. Incandescent light bulbs and flames of course do not do this and give a more stable light.
Or possibly the dogs like the smell of burning candles.
